Boot Hill
The Pioche Cemetery and the Story of the Pioche Boom
by Leo Schafer
This fascinating account of the doings and depredations of the residents of Pioche, Nevada during the boom years 1870-1875 is centered on the famous Boot Hill cemetery which accepted its first lodger in 1868. "Law and order was difficult to establish in Pioche, where there were numerous accusations regarding corrupt officials throughout the district's early history," the author reports. He quotes the local newspaper: "There has been but one man hanged in this county, though scores of murders were committed, and that one man was not hung according to law. The law in this county does not hang a man for so slight an offense as murder." 194 pages, illustrated and with city map. (Published by Pioche Book Connection in 2008 ~ Shipped by publisher.)
