The ghost town of Metropolis once boasted a four-block business district with sidewalks and street lights, a 3-story hotel and a wagon factory. From the Burger Bar at the west side of Wells drive north across the railroad tracks, then turn west on 8th Street and keep on going for the pleasant 13-mile drive through the sagebrush.

The Nevada Northern Railway takes passengers on excursions from the the old depot in East Ely south to the mines at Ruth and north to the smelter at McGill. Fares — Adults $16, Seniors (60+) $14, Students (6-18) $12, Under 6 free, somewhat less when the diesel is running. Operates mid-May through mid-September.
