along the east side of Nevada from Jackpot (above) on the Idaho border
in the north to Hoover Dam on the Arizona border in the south are
magnificent wide open spaces punctuated by flavorful communities. Side trips

of Cherry Creek and the Ward Charcoal Ovens.

The ghost town
of Metropolis once boasted a four-block business district with sidewalks
and street lights, a 3-story hotel and a wagon factory. From the Burger Bar
at the west side of Wells drive north across the railroad

drive through the sagebrush.
The Nevada
Northern Railway takes passengers on excursions from the the
old depot in East Ely south to the mines at Ruth and north to the
smelter at McGill. Fares — Adults $16, Seniors (60+) $14, Students (6-18)
$12, Under 6 free, somewhat less when the diesel is running. Operates mid-May
through mid-September.
